Which Of Your Kids Would You Send To Hell?
The most baffling thing, to me anyway, about a certain view of Christianity is that on the one hand it is based on the thought of an all-loving, all-knowing, all-compassionate God, so compassionate that he would come to earth in the form of Jesus to atone for the sins of humanity -- yet he also knows even before he created a single person that the vast majority of the billions of humans he creates will be sent to hell, a place of eternal damnation, an eternity of torture. And if you challenge that view -- if you take hell away -- you are considered a heretic. If you say a loving God wouldn't do such a thing -- a thing not even human parents can do to their human children, no matter what they've done-- you are considered a danger to the faith, a person who wants to craft God in your own image instead of the other way around. Just think about that: We are taught that love is the basis for everything God does, but to be a ``true'' Christian you must -- must -- believe God is going to send most of humanity to hell. And let's not get caught up in semantics, as some readers did. God would be doing the sending because God created us to be who we are, because God ``knows the ending from the beginning,'' because so-called free will is predicated on what and where we were at birth, decisions made by God, not us.
