While getting ready for tomorrow's panel discussion at Presbyterian College here in Clinton ...
GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum said that President Obama is a "snob" for wanting "everybody" to go to college. A couple of quick observations:
President Obama never said everybody, but did say it is increasingly important for people to have a higher education - not only in four-year institutions - because the economy is changing in such a way that more than a high school education is becoming more necessary every day.
Also, one of the groups that is being left behind is the white-working class that Santorum is trying to catch the attention of. And one of the reasons they are being left behind is because too many working-class and poor whites are not getting a higher education in sufficient numbers, all the while the manufacturing jobs that once didn't even require a high school diploma - but provided a large enough livable wage to support an entire family - are quickly disappearing and won't be returning any time soon.
Santorum's message is not only wrong but dangerous for the people he says he cares so much about.
