Murdered over dog crap?

The odds are extremely long that someone will need to kill an intruder with a gun.

But it's hard to get that remote possibility out of the minds of people for the same reason people dream of hitting it big in the Lotto and don't mind the curtailing of constitutional rights in the name of preventing the rare terrorist attack.

That's why the best research we currently have says that the gun in the typical home, if it is ever used, will usually hurt someone inside the home, not an intruder, and why burgeoning research on the "stand your ground laws" are finding that normal disputes are turning unnecessarily lethal.

The more we ignore that reality, the more these sorts of things happen ...
