Third-place game
Prestonwood Christian (Texas) 80,
Douglass (Okla.) 72
For the first time in the tournament, Prestonwood's powerful 6-foot-9 inside tandem of sophomore Julius Randle and junior Zach Peters both had monster games, combining for 54 points and 36 rebounds.
Randle finished with 31 points and 20 rebounds, while Peters, a Kansas commitment, scored eight of his team's first 10 points and finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds to help the Lions (12-10) capture third place.
“I think the difference was the start of the game,” Randle said. “Zach got into a really good rhythm, and before the game our emphasis was to get him more involved. I think him having a good rhythm and maintaining it through the game got us both going, because I can always get mine.”
The duo combined to go 19 of 26 from the field and 16 of 22 from the foul line. Sophomore guard Stephen Clark led Douglass (6-3) with 21 points, hitting 6 of 20 3-pointers to set a new tournament record with 21 treys. Senior guard Dorrian Williams, who is headed to Missouri State, had an off game and was just 3-for-20 from the field.
The teams exchanged large runs in the first half, with Prestonwood Christian coming out on top 35-33 at halftime. A 20-2 run by Prestonwood Christian gave it a 26-16 lead, and that was followed by an 11-0 run by Douglass that gave it a one-point lead.
In the second half, Prestonwood gradually built a nine-point lead with 7 minutes to play that got cut to three points with 2:30 remaining. But it was back up to nine with a minute remaining on a pair of free throws by Peters, dunk by Austin Rettig and two free throws by Andy Ryan.
