The clutch plays and close calls that Coastal's baseball team made and received in Tuesday night's 4-3 win over UNC-Wilmington were the type this team hasn't really experienced since beating Tennessee on March 17. Good things always seem to happen to the Chanticleers at Watson Stadium, and that was the case once again.

Booster club meeting recap

The Chanticleer Club, the fund-raising arm of the Coastal Carolina athletic department, held a board meeting on Tuesday morning. Here are some highlights:

I had a long conversation with baseball coach Gary Gilmore this morning. I'll have a story in Tuesday's paper advancing the home-and-home series with UNC-Wilmington. Here are some other tidbits/quotes that didn't make the paper:

News of the Day

Coastal Carolina sophomore pitcher Cody Wheeler, who threw a no-hitter last week against Hawaii, was named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Monday. He also earned Big South Pitcher of the Week honors.

The results are in on last week's poll: How many football games will Coastal win in 2009? There were 141 votes cast. You can view the results here. Here is the breakdown: 4 wins or less: 19 votes (13.5 percent); 5-6 wins: 33 votes (23.4 percent); 7-8 wins: 53 votes (37.6 percent); 9-10 wins: 29 votes (20.6 percent); and 11 wins or more: 7 votes (5 percent).

In the longest blog post of my career, here are some random observations/leftover quotes/tidbits from Friday's Pro Day and Saturday morning's football scrimmage.

Trio shine at Pro Day

Two corners and a receiver stole the show on Friday at Coastal Carolina's annual Pro Day.

Former Coastal corners Marrio Norman and Whittmin Reese and former Presbyterian and Socastee receiver Terrance Butler shined in front of scouts from the Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots.

Football revises '09 schedule

Coastal Carolina finalized its 2009 football schedule on Thursday, utilizing the simplest solution to resolve its scheduling conflict. Coastal will now travel to Towson on Sept. 19, will host N.C. A&T on Sept. 26 and have its bye on Oct. 3, coach David Bennett said.

The NFL is coming

Coastal will hold its annual Pro Day on Friday in front of a handful of NFL scouts. Nine former Chanticleers, former Socastee and Presbyterian receiver Terrance Butler and former S.C. State offensive lineman Raymond Harrison will participate in the event, which is expected to draw representatives from four to five NFL teams, including the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints.

Too many too soon?

A few days off were probably needed for Coastal's baseball players, who have lost three of their past four games. The team looked mentally and physically drained last week before ever making the trip to Winthrop. Part of the Chants' struggles, according to my research, can likely be attributed to the uniform start date.
