We are now less than a week from the 2009 football opener at Kent State. I'll have plenty on the Flashes over the course of the next week, including excerpts from interviews with tailback Eugene Jarvis, the team's undisputed star, and coach Doug Martin, a longtime assistant coach at East Carolina. Here is a depth chart for the Flashes, who will start redshirt sophomore Giorgio Morgan at quarterback.
As you can see, Kent State isn't overly big. Remember this is the MAC and not the Big Ten. I feel pretty confident in saying that an upper-echelon FCS team could compete for the MAC title some seasons. In fact, I'm not sure there is much of a difference between the skill players in the MAC and good FCS programs, though size along the defensive and offensive fronts is usually a big difference. However, Kent isn't beefy along either line, meaning Coastal's small, speedy defense shouldn't get overpowered.
Jarvis and slot back Kendrick Pressley are the players to watch on defense. Linebackers Anthony Mirando, Dorian Wood and Cobrani Mixon and safety Brian Lainhart are the players to watch on defense.
