Just got home from Coastal's 28-7 win over North Carolina A&T, which sent the Chanticleers to their bye week at 2-2. This post will be fairly short, and my next one will tell you why.
We saw some good things from the Chants tonight:
1) Eric O'Neal ran as well as he has in his career against a defense that has been very good against the run this season. Perhaps more importantly, he didn't get hurt in the process. He has the off week to return to full strength.
2) O'Neal and Tommy Fraser form a dynamic tandem of quickness and power. I thought Coastal did a great job of establishing the run early and then continuing to feed O'Neal and Fraser.
3) The defense played well again. This group has really come into its own, creating all kinds of chaos for opposing offenses. The Chants are pressuring the quarterback and catching passes from opposing quarterbacks with regularity.
Heading into the bye week, I think the Chants' priority will be developing a rhythm offensively. Whether it's Zach MacDowall or Jamie Childers - who really killed his chances of earning more playing time tonight with his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty following his touchdown - this unit needs to find a leader and begin to string together completions with some consistency. I have a feeling MacDowall, who will get some rest time next week as well, will come back strong after the bye.
There may be no better time for an off week. A visit from VMI and its potent triple option awaits after the break, though the Chants will have plenty of preparation time.
