Coastal's loss to Winthrop on Saturday has just been ruled inconsequential in many ways. UNC Asheville beat Radford Sunday afternoon, allowing Coastal to maintain a two-game lead atop the Big South standings over three second-place teams: Radford, Winthrop and UNC Asheville.
This has to be uplifting news for the Chants. I didn't expect Saturday's loss to linger into next week, but you know Cliff Ellis' team has to really feel good about itself and its positioning now. Today's news could be enough to see Coastal win the regular season.
I wrote before Thursday's game at Presbyterian that if Coastal won both games of this road trip then the Chants would likely win the regular-season title. They didn't do that, but Radford's loss had the same effect. I don't foresee Coastal blowing a two-game lead with seven conference games left.
I think the Chants lose one more league game - at High Point or at Radford - but I think they'll win all the others and clinch a berth in the NIT before the Big South tournament begins. Even if they lose twice, one of the second-place teams would have to win out just to create a tie.
