A morale booster

Coastal's loss to Winthrop on Saturday has just been ruled inconsequential in many ways. UNC Asheville beat Radford Sunday afternoon, allowing Coastal to maintain a two-game lead atop the Big South standings over three second-place teams: Radford, Winthrop and UNC Asheville.

I said the other day if Coastal could beat PC and Winthrop then it would likely win the regular-season Big South championship. After Saturday's loss in the Winthrop Coliseum, all bets are off.

The Big South announced Saturday morning that Radford-UNC Asheville has been postponed to Sunday due to winter weather in the Carolinas, but the league's other three men's basketball games, including Coastal Carolina at Winthrop (4 p.m.), will be played as scheduled today. However, there could be changes to the status quo over the next few hours, the league office said in a release.

BA ranks Chants 12th

The high expectations locally have permeated around the college baseball world for the Chanticleers, who will begin the season ranked 12th by Baseball America. The organization released its preseason top 25 Wednesday, and, seeing the amount of talent returning, obviously believes - like many of us - that Coastal is a legitimate threat to get to the College World Series.

OL commits to Coastal

Coastal Carolina football has received a 10th commitment in the Class of 2010.

James Island offensive lineman Chad Hamilton committed to the Chants Monday, his high school coach, John Patterson, said. The 6-foot-3, 290-pounder represented South Carolina in last month's Shrine Bowl.

Chants picked to win BSC

As expected, Coastal Carolina was selected to win the Big South regular-season baseball championship Tuesday.

The Chanticleers, expected to field one of the best teams in school history this spring, received 97 out of 100 votes from the league's coaches, including eight of the 10 first-place nods. Coastal outfielder Rico Noel and pitcher Cody Wheeler were tabbed as preseason player and pitcher of the year.
