Coastal Carolina was rewarded for its regular-season success when the Big South handed out its individual hardware Monday.
Forwards Joseph Harris and Chad Gray were the first pair of Chanticleers named first-team all-conference in 19 years. Coastal, the league’s regular-season champion, was the only school with multiple players on the first team.
Coastal coach Cliff Ellis, point guard Kierre Greenwood and forward Logan Johnson were also honored. Ellis, whose program tied for the best turnaround in conference history, is the Big South Coach of the Year, Greenwood was named a member of the all-freshmen team and Johnson earned a spot on the all-academic team.
Radford’s Art Parakhouski was named conference Player of the Year for the second straight season. The 6-foot-11 center joined Harris, Gray, High Point guard Nick Barbour and Charleston Southern guard Jamarco Warren on the Big South first team.
Harris was also a first teamer last season and became the ninth Coastal player to earn multiple first-team nods.
His numbers dipped slightly in his senior campaign, but that was likely due to the emergence of Gray, a junior, and freshman forward Sam McLaurin. Harris averaged 14.8 points and 9.6 rebounds this season. The Big South’s all-time rebounder, Harris has also set school records for blocks, field goal percentage and games played.
Despite starting just two games all season, Gray was a first-team pick in his first season on the floor in Conway. He redshirted last season after transferring from South Carolina and averaged 14.1 points and 4.7 points this season, shooting 50.9 percent from the field.
Coastal had serious concerns about the inexperience in its backcourt, but Greenwood and fellow freshman Danny Nieman solidified the point guard position. Greenwood averaged 8.9 points and 3.3 assists, showing an ability to score or distribute when needed. He is the 12th all-freshman honoree in school history.
The undisputed leader of Coastal’s team, Johnson was a cerebral, on-court decision maker for the Chants. The all-academic team member carries a 3.56 GPA and averages 7.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
