Despite his inexperience in such situations, Coastal's coaches have few concerns about giving junior Matt Rein his first career start tonight (6:30 p.m.) at Clemson's Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Houston native is 8-0 in 57 career relief appearances, but he hasn't made a start since he was starring at Langham Creek High School in 2007. Rein is 3-0 this season with a 1.23 ERA in 22 innings.
"He's been waiting his turn a long time," Coastal pitching coach Drew Thomas said. "I think he deserves this opportunity. He's been our rock for three years in the pen. He had some success [at Clemson] last year. Hopefully he has some [today].
"If you look at what he's done this year, he's pretty much had three starts."
Rein went 2 2/3 innings against the Tigers in 2009, giving up a hit, a walk and zero runs.
Thomas doesn't believe that Rein will approach this game any differently than he would any other.
"With Matt Rein I don't think it matters if he's starting, relieving or closing as long as he is out there," Thomas said.
"I have 100 percent faith in him and what he's done. The kids have faith in him, and we have faith in him."
Rein does not have a pitch count.
