Fraser inks with Saints

Former Coastal Carolina and Carolina Forest fullback Tommy Fraser signed a free-agent deal with the New Orleans Saints following the NFL Draft Saturday, his father said.

Fraser was contacted and offered a deal about an hour and a half after the draft concluded, Brian Mabry said.

Fraser wasn’t expected to be drafted, despite posting impressive numbers at Coastal’s Pro Day last month. However, he obviously left an impression on the Saints, who were one of the two NFL teams (Titans) on hand for that workout.

“The Saints scout had told [Coastal coach David] Bennett and his agent that they were trying to keep him under the radar,” Mabry said. “He felt like he was a guy that had some ability, so he didn’t want anybody to know about him.”

At his Pro Day workout, Fraser showed explosion with a 33-inch vertical jump and a broad jump of 9 feet, 9 inches, showed plenty of power with 28 bench press repetitions at 225 pounds and then topped it off with solid 40-yard dash times of 4.69 and 4.72.

The Saints have three fullbacks currently on their roster: Heath Evans (10th year from Auburn), Zak Keasey (third year from Princeton) and Marcus Mailei (second year from Weber State).

Fraser will be in New Orleans for the team’s rookie camp from May 7-10, Mabry said.
