Peterson to UNCW

Former Coastal basketball coach Buzz Peterson will leave Appalachian State after just one season and become the head coach at UNC Wilmington, current ASU and former Coastal assistant Jamie Kachmarik confirmed in a text message this morning. Peterson is expected to be introduced this afternoon.

It's not surprising to see Peterson move, but the destination is interesting.

Peterson had been linked with the openings at Central Florida, Marshall and Charlotte this offseason, but UCF hired Donnie Jones, Marshall hired former College of Charleston coach Tom Herrion and Charlotte hired Alan Major.

As Coastal fans know quite well -- he flirted with openings at the College of Charleston and Furman while with the Chanticleers -- Peterson doesn't mind having plenty of options. He seems to enjoy the chase and the honeymoon more than the grind.

After spending four seasons to open his career at Appalachian State, he was with Tulsa for just one season before heading to Tennessee. He was fired after four seasons and spent just two seasons in Conway -- doesn't that same like an eternity now? -- before leaving for a front-office gig with the Charlotte Bobcats. He was there for just two seasons before heading back to ASU.

It's interesting that this hire comes now, because former UNCW coach Brad Brownell was just hired at Clemson earlier this week. The Seahawks haven't been great since Brownell left following the 2005-06 season for Wright State.

Kachmarik will make the move with Peterson to UNCW, he said.

Former Coastal forward Anthony Breeze, originally signed by Peterson, is now stuck in Boone. Due to transfer rules, he sat out at Appalachian State last season, but he would lose a year of eligibility if he transferred again.
