A interesting name is penciled in as Coastal's starter for Sunday's series finale with UNC Asheville, which lost 6-4 at Watson Stadium earlier today.
True freshman Josh Conway will make his first career weekend start against the Bulldogs. He has started just one game in his career, a win over The Citadel on April 13. However, the coaching staff wants to get him on the mound for some significant innings to judge how exactly he can help this team down the stretch.
Coastal coach Gary Gilmore has some high expectations for what Conway could be down the road.
He believes that the difference between his team right now and Virginia is that the Cavaliers have a dominant closer in Kevin Arico. Coastal's Austin Fleet has that potential, but there is a possibility that he'll end up as a starting pitcher in the postseason.
"I think Conway one day will be like that," Gilmore said. "He's just a freshman. He very, very good, but just doesn't have the experience that [Arico] has. That's part of the reason we are starting him Sunday. We've got three or four weeks to try and accelerate his development. So, come the end of the season, we have some options with Fleet. He can go in two directions."
Conway has made 13 appearances this season. He has a 1-0 record and a 3.24 ERA in 25 innings. He has 18 strikeouts and just six walks, though he has given up three home runs.
