Quinton Teal re-signs with Chargers

Former Coastal Carolina standout Quinton Teal has re-signed with the San Diego Chargers, who released him earlier this month.

Teal will likely be used exclusively on special teams, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

CCU releases women's basketball schedule

Coastal Carolina released it women's basketball schedule Wednesday as the Chants prepare to open practice this Sunday.

Highlighting the schedule is a Nov. 19 game at North Carolina and an appearance in the Dec. 3-4 University of Evansville Winter Classic.

The Chants, who finished 17-13 overall and 7-9 in the Big South last season, open their season Nov. 12 at home against Southern Virginia.

The team returns two starters from last season in seniors Katie Ahaus (team-high 70 assists) and Sydnei Moss (15.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game) and also brings back senior center Katie White (54 blocks in 23 games).

Coastal Carolina releases men's basketball schedule

 

Coastal Carolina released its men’s basketball schedule Tuesday, revealing a slate that features 16 home games and marquee contests against Georgetown and Louisiana State.

 

The season opens Nov. 12 at Kimbel Arena against Piedmont College, and Big South play begins Dec. 4 against Charleston Southern.

 

Highlighting the non-conference schedule is an appearance in the Charleston Classic, in which the Chanticleers will play three games between Nov. 18-21 at Carolina First Arena in Charleston, and a trip to Louisiana State on Dec. 13.

 

Coastal Carolina is coming off a season in which it finished 28-7 overall and 15-3 in the Big South -- both program records -- while reaching the championship game of the conference tournament and earning a berth in the NIT for its first postseason appearance since 1993.

Hillary optimistic about quick return

Sophomore backup quarterback Aramis Hillary was using a crutch to get around at practice Monday night, but that doesn't mean he expects to be out long.

Hillary, who sustained a knee injury diving into the end zone for a first quarter touchdown Saturday against Delaware State, hasn't ruled out being available for Coastal Carolina's game at Richmond this weekend.

"I'm hoping to play on Saturday. We're playing it by ear right now, but I'm feeling good," Hillary said. "I'm feeling good -- better than I expected. So I think it's going well. It will be fine."

Chants coach David Bennett called the injury a sprained knee, while Hillary said it felt more like a bruise. It occurred when a Delaware State player's helmet collided with Hillary's knee on that touchdown play.

Bennett also said it would be a day-to-day evaluation with Hillary this week, but in the meanwhile, the Chants will make sure junior Jamie Childers is ready behind senior starter Zach MacDowall.

"I think we've got to go in and be prepared to not have him," Bennett said of Hillary.

Childers, of course, was the Chants' backup quarterback before moving to tight end this summer. He made three starts last season.

The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top-25 Poll (Sept. 27)

Liberty is the lone Big South team in the latest FCS rankings, and the Flames are just barely in at No. 25 after losing consecutive games.

Two other Coastal Carolina opponents have a spot in this week's poll, though.

Richmond, which hosts CCU on Saturday, is ranked No. 11 despite a 1-2 record -- with those losses coming against Virginia and No. 5 Delaware.

And Georgia Southern, which defeated CCU two weekends ago, has moved into the poll at No. 19.

Gardner-Webb received a few votes, and for reasons unknown, winless Delaware State received 23 votes despite losing 34-14 to Coastal Carolina over the weekend. Perhaps, voters were intending to vote for the Delaware Blue Hens and got confused.

Jolly recognized by Big South

Coastal Carolina senior Tarvorris Jolly was named the Big South special teams player of the week, becoming the first Chanticleer to receive one of the league's weekly honors this season.

Jolly received the accolade for his 94-yard touchdown return of a blocked Delaware State field goal in the second quarter Saturday, helping the Chants to their first win of the season.

Jolly picked the ball up after Josh Norman blocked Mario Diaz-Aviles' 18-yard attempt, and he outran the Hornets the rest of the way to become the first player in program history to return a blocked field goal for a touchdown.

That gave the Chants a 28-0 lead in the second quarter as they rolled to a 34-14 victory.

Stony Brook's Edwin Gowins was named the Big South's offensive player of the week after rushing for 101 yards and a touchdown in 13 carries against No. 9 Massachusetts. He is the first FCS player to rush for more than 100 yards against UMass this season.

Stony Brook's Jonas Rousseau was named the league's defensive player of the week with nine tackles -- including 4.5 for loss

And Charleston Southern's James Nunley is the conference's freshman of the week after recording a touchdown catch at Hawaii and finishing with 139 all-purpose yards.

DE Quinton Davis likely out for season

Coastal Carolina is expected to be without sophomore defensive end Quinton Davis for the rest of the season due to an undisclosed ankle injury sustained in the third quarter Saturday against Georgia Southern.

Davis, a preseason all-Big South selection, had 12 tackles through three games. He registered three sacks and seven tackles for loss last season.

"I don't think he's going to be with us for the rest of the year," Chanticleers coach David Bennett said Wednesday afternoon.

Bennett said the injury occurred on a low block against Davis, adding "That's part of the game."

"He's one of our toughest players. He's a tough individual. If I'm in a foxhole, I'd like to pick him to be with me," Bennett said.

"When he was in pain, I knew something's probably wrong here. It's probably just not a sprain. He's going to get fixed up. ... Thank goodness he'll have two more years to play here."

Senior Kent Harper is listed atop the depth chart at Davis' defensive end spot, though Bennett said the Chants will rely on a committee of players to fill the void.

Harper has been impressive in a reserve role this season with 13 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack.

Big South announces football players of the week

Gardner-Webb and Liberty swept the Big South player-of-the-week awards after both teams scored upset wins over FBS programs.

Gardner-Webb pulled off a late rally on its way to a 38-37 overtime win at Akron, while Liberty scored a 27-23 victory at Ball State.

Runnin' Bulldogs receiver James Perry III and Liberty quarterback Mike Brown were named co-offensive players of the week for the conference.

Perry had 10 receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns -- scoring at the end of the third quarter and again in the fourth as Gardner-Webb rallied back from a 31-17 deficit.

Brown, the Big South offensive player of the week for week one, put together another strong performance with a career-high 363 yards of total offense. He completed 24-of-38 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 18 times for 87 yards and what was ultimately the game-winning touchdown with 4:55 left in the game.

Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb took the other awards as Bryce Nixon was named the defensive player of the week, kicker Ryan Gates the special teams player of the week and running back Juanne Blount the freshman of the week for the second week in a row.

Nixon had nine tackles (eight solo), a pass break-up in the end zone, a fumble recovery and blocked Akron's extra point attempt in overtime. Gates was 5-of-5 on PATs and connected on his lone field goal attempt from 40 yards. Blount rushed for a team-high 69 yards and scored a game-tying touchdown in overtime.

Coastal Carolina running back Eric O'Neal, linebacker Andrae Jacobs and kicker Justin Durham were nominated for the Chanticleers.

Schedule released for Charleston Classic basketball tournament

The official schedule for the Charleston Classic men's basketball tournament was released Monday, and as expected Coastal Carolina will open the three-day event against Georgetown.

The Chanticleers, one of eight teams in the field, play the tournament's first game at noon Nov. 18.

They would then play against either the winner or loser, depending on how they fare, of the second game between USC-Upstate and Wofford. The second-round game between the winners of those opening matchups is slated to be televised on ESPNU.

Other first-round matchups are East Carolina vs. N.C. State and George Mason vs. UNC-Charlotte.

Each team plays three games over three days (Thursday, Friday and Sunday), all at Carolina First Arena in Charleston. The championship and third-place games are also set to be televised on ESPNU.

CCU health update heading into Towson

Senior quarterback Zach MacDowall has looked sharp in practice the last two days after missing a couple practices early in the week, so there doesn't seem to be any reason to think he won't be full strength Saturday at Towson.

Junior tight end David Duran, meanwhile, missed a second straight practice Thursday with an infection behind his knee. But he had said Wednesday night he fully expected to be on the field for the Chanticleers this weekend.

Duran was Coastal Carolina's top offensive performer last weekend with four receptions for 64 yards.

"He looks better today," Chants coach David Bennett said. "I think he'll be out there."

Sophomore cornerback Dontavious Johnson is expected to start in place of senior Tarvorris Jolly (hamstring), but otherwise, Bennett said he doesn't expect any other changes to the starting lineup.
