Durham expected to remain kicker ... for now

After missing two extra point attempts Saturday at Richmond and continuing the inconsistencies that have plagued his season so far, it looks like senior kicker Justin Durham is going to get at least one more chance to steady himself.

But he'll be on a very short leash.

Coastal Carolina coach David Bennett acknowledged that had the Chanticleers been in position to kick a field goal midway through the fourth quarter Saturday -- that is, if Zach MacDowall had thrown the ball away instead of throwing that interception in the end zone -- they likely would have called on redshirt-freshman Grant Clayton to take the kick.

But that opportunity never came, and now Durham will get at least one more opportunity (next weekend at Presbyterian) to show if he can hold on to the job he's held since his freshman season.

"When we go down there, he'll still be our guy if he can handle it," Bennett said. "I think we've given him every chance."

Clayton, a transfer from Louisiana-Monroe, has not kicked in a college game yet.

...

In other news and notes from the Chants' bye week, sophomore center Pat Williams remains hobbled by the ankle injury that sidelined him for the second half of the loss at Richmond.

He was wearing a brace/boot on his lower leg and foot Tuesday night as the team returned to practice, and Bennett was still unsure of the severity of the injury or how long Williams might be sidelined.

Junior right guard Tim Franklin slid over to center after Williams left the game Saturday, while reserves Kenneth Page and Kaleb Dees rotated in at guard.
