Three Coastal Carolina assistant coaches have drawn interest from other football programs since the end of the season, CCU coach David Bennett said.
Maurice Drayton, who debuted as the Chanticleers' special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach this past season, informed Bennett he was contacted directly by somebody connected to Delaware State about the school's head coaching position.
"Maurice, being the class act that he is, he told me someone -- I guess it's a booster at Delaware State -- called and asked him if he would be interested in the position," Bennett said.
Delaware State dismissed former coach Al Lavan last month after a 3-8 season -- which included a loss to CCU. It was the third straight losing season for the Hornets.
Bennett has said multiple times that he thinks Drayton will be a successful head coach one day. Speaking last week, he said he wasn't sure if or when Drayton might interview for the position.
Bennett also received a call from a program interested in offensive line coach Patrick Covington -- another new addition to the CCU staff last season -- in regard to an unspecified position. And an athletic director at another school called Bennett to express interest in possibly talking to running backs coach Keith James in the event that school's head coach left for another job.
Bennett said shortly before the new year that none of the coaches had yet interviewed for outside positions, but he said he would encourage them to pursue any opportunities for advancement in their careers.
"I told our whole staff, if you have a chance to go be a coordinator if you're not a coordinator, or to be a head coach if you're not a head coach, you'd be crazy [not to pursue it]," Bennett said. "You have to go interview."
