La Stella signing with Braves, headed to Rome, Ga.

Reigning Big South player of the year Tommy La Stella is officially launching his professional career.

La Stella, an eighth-round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, said via text message that he planned to sign with the organization Sunday evening. He'll eventually report to the team's Class A affiliate in Rome, Ga., though he wasn't sure when he would make his minor league debut.

La Stella led Coastal Carolina with a .398 batting average, 59 runs, 14 home runs, 70 RBI and a .680 slugging percentage as a junior this season. The second baseman was one of five Chanticleers drafted this week -- including four juniors -- and he had indicated soon after being selected that he intended to forgo his senior season to get started on the next challenge in his career.

He finishes his collegiate career tied for 10th on CCU's all-time home runs list with 28 in just two seasons.
