Touted receiver DeMario Bennett will not make his debut with Coastal Carolina this season after all, CCU football coach David Bennett said.
The sophomore-to-be transferred from South Carolina in January and was expected to be an immediate contributor for the Chanticleers, but he will instead sit out the 2011 season for academic reasons.
“The plan for him is to come back here, work on his grades [and] lose a year,” David Bennett said.
DeMario Bennett was used sparingly by the Gamecocks, making one catch for four yards in eight games as a redshirt-freshman last year, but the 6-foot-2 downfield threat was in line for a significant role in a Chants offense that must replace its top two receivers from last season.
Bennett is expected to remain in the program and would have two years of eligibility left after this coming season.
