Chants opt to redshirt Poole after knee surgery

As the Coastal Carolina men's basketball team gets ready for its season opener Friday against Division III Covenant, Chanticleers coach Cliff Ellis revealed the team will be down a man this season as freshman forward Tyler Poole had surgery a couple weeks ago to repair a torn meniscus in his knee.

“We lost some depth with Tyler Poole,” Ellis said Tuesday. “He’s had knee surgery, can’t put any bearing weight on it for six weeks, and him being a freshman, our plans are to redshirt him.”

Poole, a 6-foot-7 forward from Hickory, N.C., who will also be part of the Chants’ baseball program, was expected to see action as a true freshman on the court for Coastal. He was a big recruit for the program after initially committing to Ole Miss.

“He’s a great pick-and-pop guy, can shoot the 3, can seal down low. He would have helped us,” Ellis said. “He would have been depth. But we don’t have it now, so we’ve just got to move on.”
