Junior guard Danny Nieman is eligible to rejoin the Coastal Carolina men's basketball program Friday after being suspended for the fall semester due to a violation of the university’s code of conduct.
Coach Cliff Ellis said Nieman will be in uniform against Lynchburg College and there’s a “possibility” he could play even though he has not been allowed to practice with or be around the team through the first part of the season.
That means Ellis and the Chants have opted against using a redshirt to save a full year of eligibility for Nieman, who was the only player to start all 34 games for Coastal last season. He averaged 6.2 points and ranked second on the team with 103 assists last season.
“We’ve talked about it. I think basically we’re going to move forward and play him,” Ellis said. “He had that desire, and I talked to members of the team because it is their team. I think our team wants him to play, he wants to play and therefore I’m for all that. But that decision was not made without talking to the leadership of our team and to Danny.”
