South Carolina assistant coach Steve Spurrier Jr., once thought to be a leading candidate to replace David Bennett as Coastal Carolina's next head football coach, is no longer a candidate for the position.
Spurrier Jr. confirmed through South Carolina media relations director Steve Fink in a text message that "That is accurate."
CCU president David DeCenzo and athletic director Hunter Yurachek announced Friday night that Bennett had been relieved of his duties as head football coach after nine seasons and that a search for his replacement would commence immediately.
Spurrier Jr., the son of South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier, is currently the Gamecocks' receivers coach, passing game coordinator and recruiting coordinator. He has also worked as an assistant coach at Florida, Oklahoma and Arizona, and was quickly rumored to be at the top of CCU's wishlist.
Yurachek, who said Saturday he hopes to have a new coach in place by January for the final push of recruiting season, said he will not be commenting any further during the coaching search.
