Update on CCU football assistants

New Coastal Carolina football coach Joe Moglia has not announced any additions to his coaching staff yet, but what is clear is that the new staff won't have many holdovers.

Of the assistants leftover from former coach David Bennett's tenure, only offensive line coach Patrick Covington is sure to be with the program next season while tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator Gary Smallen and defensive ends coach Grant Cain will remain in the interim, CCU associate athletic director for media relations Mike Cawood said Tuesday.

Moglia was not made available for comment Tuesday on the status of his coaching staff.

Covington has spent the last two seasons at Coastal and was one of two coaches -- along with assistant head coach/special teams coordinator/receivers coach Maurice Drayton -- who was under contract through next season.

Drayton confirmed Sunday that he has been offered an assistant coaching position at the FBS level with Southern Mississippi and intended to leave Coastal for that job, though he hadn't officially signed a contract yet.

Moglia said at his introductory news conference Dec. 20 that he hoped to have half his coaching staff filled by the early part of this month and the rest by the end of February. January is a key month for recruiting as players make their final decisions in advance of National Signing Day on Feb. 1
