As was expected after his near record-setting performance Saturday, Coastal Carolina redshirt-freshman quarterback Alex Ross was named the Big South Conference's freshman of the week, and senior teammate Johnny Hartsfield was also honored as the league's special teams player of the week.
Making his first collegiate start Saturday, Ross led Coastal to a 55-33 win at Gardner-Webb while setting a Big South freshman record with 404 yards of total offense. That also ranks as the second-highest total in Chanticleer history behind a 425-yard effort from Tyler Thigpen in 2006.
Ross completed 16-of-30 passes for 342 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 62 yards as well. He led Coastal to scoring drives on eight of the team's 13 possessions, and overall the Chants finished with 596 offensive yards -- their second-highest total ever.
Hartsfield, meanwhile, blocked a Gardner-Webb extra point in the first quarter, which looked pretty significant as the Chants protected a slim 34-33 lead entering the fourth before pulling away down the stretch. The senior added three tackles and a pass break-up on defense.
