Three Coastal Carolina football players received honors this week for their contributions to the Chanticleers' 27-20 season-opening win at South Carolina State on Saturday.
Senior LaDarius Hawthorne was named the Big South Special Teams Player of the Week after coming up with the play of the game, a blocked field goal in the third quarter that teammate Quinn Backus would return 56-yards for a game-tying touchdown.
Cornerback Samson Baldwin was named the Big South Freshman of the Week after collecting seven total tackles, including a three-yard tackle for loss, and two pass break-ups in his collegiate debut.
And Backus was named the National Linebacker of the Week by College Football Performance Awards. In addition to his touchdown return of the blocked field goal, he finished with a team-high 10 tackles (seven solo) and a sack.
