Ellis asks for more from fans

While there was much to be encouraged by Wednesday night for the Coastal Carolina men's basketball team, as it knocked off Big South rival UNC Asheville 81-78 at The HTC Center, there was one aspect of the game that did not particularly please head coach Cliff Ellis.

He took time in his postgame news conference to implore the fans to be louder and more involved in future games after what he felt was a lackluster game atmosphere for the home team.

"We're going to have to get some energy in this crowd," he said. "The student body has got to come up [bigger]. We went to Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb -- this was not even close. When we got a 12-point lead, the crowd got into it, but it's going to take a full team effort because we've got Winthrop on Saturday. This game could have gotten away from us. If we had lost this game, it would not only have been our team; it would have been the energy in that crowd.

"I appreciate the people being here, but there just was no energy in that crowd and that's uncalled for. We've got to have better."

Coastal hosts Winthrop at 7 p.m. Saturday night. Both teams are part of a four-way tie atop the conference's South Division standings at 2-1 in league play.
