Common Chords By Randall Hill
Hasee Ciaccio
and Dori Sanders
During a recent practice session, 17-year-old Hasee Ciaccio
was jamming out on her mandolin when she decided to get closer to her
16-year-old band mate Dori Sanders of Conway. Ciaccio stood and scoots her chair
closer with the back of her leg, all the time keeping the beat going with the
song.
Ciaccio and Sanders are the backbone of the band The Alohas,
formed and named in honor of jam sessions held during their youth with family
and friends at the now bulldozed Aloha Motel that stood at 74th Ave
North in Myrtle Beach.
“There was this big room with a fireplace and it was so
cozy,” said Ciaccio about the motel’s game room. “For me it was some of my
fondest memories.”
The two musicians are not typical teenagers. “We’ve come to
realize this whole realm of underground music that is so different,” said
Sanders between songs during the jam session. Across her lap was an ornate
Washburn dreadnought guitar that is nearly as large as the musician. “People
will scroll through my iPod and are surprised. It’s really funny to see people
try to figure out this music.”
The future looks bright for the two young musicians. Ciaccio
plans to make music her career while Sanders wants music to supplement a job as
an interior designer.
“I see myself designing all these gorgeous homes for people
and as kind of a night job playing music with Hasee,” said Sanders.
Ciaccio said she just wants to be happy about the future.
“This means some sort of job teaching music to children and working around
others who allow passion to caress their lives.”
