Polite, well-mannered, deserving are a few of the words that are repeated by school officials when asked about the children of Amanda and Derrick Suggs, who will soon have a new home courtesy of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”
The family has five children, the oldest three being Amanda’s brothers, whom she adopted to keep the boys out of foster care.
Jacob Carter, 17, is a sophomore at Loris High School from where older brother, James Carter, 19, graduated last June.
"He’s a fine young man, a chivalrous young gentleman, always polite, always respectful,” said English teacher Danny McPherson of Jacob. He said Jacob always puts forth effort and said he enjoys life and puts himself into things, citing a class newscast where Jacob’s team boxed to illustrate a battle scene from “Beowulf.”
“I can’t say enough nice things about Jacob,” McPherson said. “I’ve never seen him without a smile. Realizing some of his struggles is inspiring to me. If I’m not as happy as I should be, it really makes me examine myself.”
