Spoiler alert on the U.S. Open Challenge
If you want to know how Tony Romo, Justin Timberlake, Matt Lauer and amateur John Atkinson of Omaha, Neb., did in the Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge, read on. If you'd rather wait and watch Sunday from 2-3 p.m. on NBC prior to the final round of the U.S. Open, stop now.
It was taped on Friday at Torrey Pines' South Course, and was a test to see if an 8-handicap _ Atkinson _ could break 100 on a U.S. Open course, in this case the par-71, 7,643-yard Torrey Pines. To be fair, the rough may be close to what it will be at Torrey Pines this weekend, but I'm sure the greens weren't even close. They'll be much harder and faster by Sunday, I promise.
Anyhow, Torrey Pines proved to be a tough test for all four single-digit handicappers. (Atkinson: 8.1; Lauer: 5.6; Romo: 2.2; Timberlake: 6.0). Romo shot a 13-over 84, Timberlake shot a 27-over 98, Lauer came up just short with a 29-over 100 and Atkinson carded a 43-over 114. Atkinson, a non-smoker, was diagnosed with Stage IV inoperable lung cancer last year at the age of 38 and has battled to overcome it.
Perhaps the most depressing number from the event was that it reportedly took the group 7 hours to play.
