Hank Hecht of Sunset Beach, N.C., left Quail Hollow Club with more than memories Thursday following his first visit to the Quail Hollow Championship.
Englishman Greg Owen discovered his putter was damaged just prior to teeing off in the first round and he found a quick replacement. It was a Boccieri Golf Heavy Putter with a long belly-length shaft.
Owen hit 14 of 18 greens, but after attempting 37 putts and shooting a 4-over-par 76 he was ready to lighten his bag of the Heavy Putter and a caddie gave it to Hecht, who was standing near the scoring area.
``Somebody’s caddie came over and said, `How tall are you?’ ’’ Hecht said. ``I said, `Six-foot-3,’ and he said, `Here, perfect. It’s yours.’ I have never tried it before but I’m going to now.’’
He'll likely put it in use at Sandpiper Bay Golf Club, where he and his wife retired seven years ago from Wallkill, N.Y.
