You have to feel for Ken Green.
Green, who has battled depression for several years, is trying to endure his second family tragedy in eight months.
Hunter Green, the son of former professional golfer Ken Green, was found dead in his dorm room at Southern Methodist University last week. The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Tuesday that the student was Green, 21, a sophomore. Campus officials said no foul play was involved and an investigation is under way.
Last summer, Green, who won five PGA Tour events between 1985-89 and played on the 1989 Ryder Cup team, had his lower right leg amputated after a recreational vehicle accident in which his brother, girlfriend and dog were killed.
Despite his prosthetic leg, Green is hoping to return to the Champions Tour this year, and reportedly planned to make his competitive debut in 2010 at the Sunbelt Senior Tour's "Ken Green's Comeback Trail" event March 2-4 in Florida.
Green earned about $3.7 million and had 44 top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour before a bout with depression derailed his career. He has talked of critical children's voices in his head that interrupted his concentration and left him contemplating suicide. He also coped with financial worries from 2005 to 2008, the year he turned 50.
Fellow pros gathered for an event in September to raise money to pay some of his medical and personal expenses, and attendees included Fred Funk, Curtis Strange and Mark Calcavecchia.
You have to hope Green can summon the resolve to continue with his golf career plans and that they'll bring him some kind of joy and comfort.
