McPherson ramping up schedule

Considering the LPGA Tour’s sparse schedule of 24 tournaments this year, Conway native Kristy McPherson may be playing a stretch of 11 tournaments in 14 weeks – including the unofficial two-day Brazil Cup this weekend – easily the tour’s most concentrated stretch.

She said she may play all of them and see how her body holds up. The stretch began with the April 29-May 2 Tres Marias Championship in Mexico, and includes events in each of the past two weeks. McPherson has top-20 finishes in all three.

She is one of only 30 players in this weekend’s $700,000 event in Brazil. Including that event, four of the 14 events are out of the country, with the final two in France and England.

Of the LPGA Tour’s 24 events that are a minimum of 54 holes and have what could be considered full fields, 10 are in foreign countries. So not only are tournaments spread out over the course of the year, they are also spread out across the globe.
“That’s an issue we’ve had the past couple years, going global, but that’s where the sponsors are,” McPherson said. “Hopefully that’s something that will get stronger for the U.S., get more sponsorships back and get more domestic events. Everybody wants to play more in their home country, but you have to go wherever they tell you to go.”
