Mickelson has chance to be No. 1

Phil Mickelson has been chasing Tiger Woods in the Official World Golf Ranking forever, and he finally has a chance to catch him this week at The Players Championship. Mickelson can take over the No. 1 ranking from Woods if he wins and Woods finishes outside the top five. Looking at their head-to-head matchups its not hard to see how Woods has always been ranked ahead of Mickelson.
Woods has an enormous lead in head-to-head wins over the years, but Mickelson has put a quick dent in his deficit over the past eight months.
They have played in the same tournament 174 times, and Woods has won 53 of those events compared to Mickelson’s 14 wins.
But Mickelson won the past three entering last week's Quail Hollow Championship, where Mickelson finished second to Rory McIlroy and Woods missed the cut. Mickelson's three wins came at the Masters three weeks ago, HSBC Champions in China in November and Tour Championship in September.
