Ivan Schronce figured for all he went through between the second and final rounds of the 86th Horry County State Bank Carolinas Open, something good was destined to happen Thursday in the final round at the Surf Golf and Beach Club. Shortly after leaving the Surf Club Wednesday his car broke down on U.S. 17. Schronce believes his car had radiator or water pump issues. He found a mechanic at a garage that was open at 7:30 p.m. that would hold the car overnight and work on it Thursday, and his mother drove down from Wilmington, N.C., to pick him. He arrived home around midnight, got up at 5:30 a.m. and his mother brought him back to the course early Thursday morning. “I knew when that car broke down [Wednesday] night that was a sign: ‘I’m going through too much garbage for this not to go well,’ ” Schronce said. “So I thought it was designed.”
He birdied seven of the first 12 holes without a bogey in a 5-under 66 Thursday and won the $55,000 event for club pros in the Carolinas by five strokes. Schronce has been working recently on coordinating his hip turn with his upper body movement, and has found the right timing. “I just found something about a month ago. . . . and I’m just killing it. I just can’t miss. When you get your lower body and your upper body working together, it’s everything to golf.”
