Several Grand Strand residents or natives attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open this year, and most didn't make it through 18-hole local qualifiers. Jeremy Pope of Pawleys Island reached sectional qualifying, but he was unable to qualify for the U.S. Open field on Monday. In a 36-hole sectional qualifier at McArthur Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla., Pope tied for 20th in a field of 49 players vying for three spots in the U.S. Open, being played June 17-20 at Pebble Beach Golf Links. He shot 75-74–149 to finish nine shots out of a U.S. Open spot. The three qualifiers from that site were long-hitting former Hooters Tour player Gary Woodland at 138, amateur Kevin Phelan of Saint Augustine, Fla., at 138, and Travis Hampshire of Tampa, Fla.
