Expect Johnson to contend today

I don't expect Dustin Johnson to repeat the struggles today that plagued him in the final round of the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach two months ago. Johnson entered the season's second major with a three-stroke lead and collapsed early with some wayward shots and bad decisions. He's back in the final group on a Sunday in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, and I believe he'll make adjustments based on that experience at Pebble Beach.
Johnson said in a pre-round interview on the driving range with TNT's Jim Huber that he believes he got quick and did things too quickly under the pressure of Open, and he'll be conscious about slowing himself down and being more patient.
If Johnson can drive the ball as well as he did in Saturday's third-round 67, he could overcome playing partner Nick Watney's three-stroke lead. Johnson's 67 was nearly stress-free. He drove the ball so long and straight he had numerous good looks at birdies and never really struggled to make a par. He's been working on his wedge game from 150 yards in, and had he hit some better iron shots the round could have been 65 or lower.
Johnson should be a contender today. He's 9 under on par-5s and he could get off to a quick start with the second and fifth holes being par-5s.
