Several hours after Dustin Johnson putted out on the 18th green in the Tour Championship, he lost $1 million on the 17th and 18th holes at East Lake Golf Club.
As it turned out, bogeys on the 18th hole Sunday by both Ernie Els and K.J. Choi, a triple bogey by Geoff Ogilvy on the 17th hole, and a bogey on the 17th hole by Retief Goosen cost Johnson $1 million.
Those mistakes by four of the world’s top golfers allowed both Luke Donald and Charley Hoffman to move ahead of Johnson in the FedExCup standings and drop him to fifth. Third place paid $2 million, fourth paid $1.5 million and fifth pays $1 million.
Johnson finished seven points behind Charley Hoffman, who earned 500 FedExCup points for his solo sixth finish, and he finished 207 points behind Donald, who earned 1,500 points for his solo second.
Had either Els or Choi made par on the 18th, they would have tied Hoffman for sixth and taken 25 points from his total, allowing Johnson to finish ahead of him. Ogilvy was tied with Hoffman at 3 under after he bogeyed the 16th hole, and a triple bogey on 17 dropped him out of the tie.
Goosen’s bogey on the 17th dropped him out of a tie for second with Luke Donald, allowing Donald to finish alone in second and earned 250 more FedExCup points to finish 207 ahead of Johnson in third.
Furyk finished first in FedExCup points with 2,980, Matt Kuchar finished second with 2,728, Donald finished third with 2,700, Hoffman finished fourth with 2,500, and Johnson finished fifth with 2,493. Johnson finished a full 242 points ahead of sixth-place Paul Casey.
