U.S. Team could use Watney this week

An 81 while playing alongside Dustin Johnson in the final group on Sunday at the PGA Championship, on the eve of Corey Pavin's announcement of his four captain's picks, may have cost Nick Watney a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup Team. It sure looks like the team could use him now.

Watney played spectacular golf over his final 29 holes of the Tour Championship this weekend to tie for fourth, notwithstanding bogeys on 16 and 17 Sunday in heavy rain. If you combine the back nine 28 Watney shot in Saturday's third round and the 30 he posted Sunday on the front nine, Watney played a very difficult East Lake Golf Club in 58 over 18 holes. He had also birdied the eigth and ninth holes Saturday, making him 14-under par in a 20-hole stretch. Incredible stuff.

Maybe Jeff Overton, who shot an 11-over 219 at East Lake this week, will get hurt on the flight over and Pavin will need a replacement.

Pavin's picks were Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and Rickie Fowler.
