Eventful first day at British Open highlighted by Johnson ace

Let's see what Dustin Johnson has in store for us with his second round of the British Open at Royal St. George's. The first round was pretty special.

Johnson was floundering at 4-over par through 13 holes before catching fire. He birdied the 14th and 15th holes, then hit the shot of the day with a pitching wedge from 159 yards into the hole on the par-3 16th hole for a hole-in-one. He added a birdie on the 17th hole to play a the stretch of four holes 14-17 at 5 under to reach 1 under for the tournament before a closing bogey dropped him to even par. The run has him solidly in the tournament entering Friday's second round.

In addition to Johnson, the story lines in the first round were compelling, with 20-year-old amateur Tom Lewis, who was named after Tom Watson, playing with Watson and shooting a 5-under 65 to tie Thomas Bjorn for the lead. He's the first amateur to lead the British after the first round in more than 40 years. Bjorn is a great story in his own right. He was felled by the 16th hole the last time the British Open was at Royal St. George's in 2003, needing three shots to get out of a bunker while holding a lead, leading to Ben Curtis' win. Bjorn was also an alternate who didn't know he was in the field until Monday night, after Vijay Singh withdrew.

Round 2 should provide some more interesting story lines.
