McIlroy gets nod from Golf Magazine

Player of the year awards in golf are forthcoming, and one of the first is the inaugural Golf Magazine Player of the Year, which will be featured in the magazine’s December 2011 issue, on newsstands Nov. 11.

Sports Illustrated Golf Group’s writers and editors have named Rory McIlroy Player of the Year, probably because of the impact he had on the game and amount of attention he brought to it as much as his results.

The 22-year-old transcended golf more than any other player in the game in 2011, losing one major in heart-wrenching fashion and winning another with an explosive performance. He also appeared in tabloids, particularly British tabloids, after breaking up with his girlfriend, getting back together with her, then leaving her for the world’s No. 1 tennis player, Carolina Wozniaki. McIlroy made appearances in the stands at tennis tournaments to root on his new romantic interest.

McIlroy collapsed on the back nine at Augusta National on Sunday to blow the Masters after playing splendid golf for 3 ½ rounds, then blew the field away in the U.S. Open.

The December issue of Golf Magazine includes a special 16-page section devoted to McIlroy, including a look back at his year, a special feature on his hometown of Holywood, Northern Ireland, a look at the inner circle of people closest to him, and an in-depth analysis of his game.

While I respect the decision, I'm sticking with Luke Donald as player of the year. Donald still has a chance to win both the PGA Tour and European Tour money titles while finishing the year ranked No. 1 in the world.
