Pope not showing signs of rust

If Jeremy Pope continues to play as well as he did a couple weeks ago, he may reconsider his break from the game.

Pope played a sparse schedule in 2011 and started the J.S. Pope Heating and Air company with his father, Jerry.

After working through the winter rush in the heating business, Pope planned to enter a few mini-tour events, including one or more Hooters Tour Carolina Winter Series events, and play in at least two Minor League Tour events in Florida, then see how it goes.

Pope, 39, finished second in The Golf & Gaming Tours of Little River’s 32-player Match Play event at River Hills Golf and Country Club, which always has some additional funds up for grabs in addition to the official purse.

Paul Woodbury of Lake City defeated Pope in the final match on the 22nd hole to earn the winner’s prize of $3,500 while Pope earned $2,000. Galivants Ferry native and recent PGA Tour caddie Michael Maness tied for fifth to earn $900.

The solid field included players from Canada, the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida and Kentucky. Many of the players had recently completed PGA Tour Q-School qualifying.

The event benefitted the Tara Hall Home for Boys in Georgetown.
