Woods' victory piques interest in 2012 season

Tiger Woods’ win in his Chevron World Challenge tournament may have come against only 17 other players, but it’s significant for the upcoming 2012 season nonetheless.

Just the prospect of Woods approaching the level of play that dominated the game for more than a decade now becomes the dominant story line for next year. It adds a level of intrigue to the season that only Woods can create.

More people in the world of sports will pay attention to the game if Woods makes a resurgence.

It looks like we’ll have to wait until a European Tour event the last week of January in Abu Dhabi to see if Woods’ progress continues.

Rory McIlroy’s decision to return to the PGA Tour next year after opting against tour membership in 2011 adds to the interest. Let’s hope Dustin Johnson quickly recovers from his surgery on knee cartilage to become part of the story.

Should be a fun year.
