Johnson back against strong field at Torrey Pines

Coastal Carolina alum Dustin Johnson returns to action on the PGA Tour this week at the Farmers Insurance Open after withdrawing from the Sony Open in Hawaii on Jan. 11 with the flu. He opened the season a week earlier by winning the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

Johnson has two top-20s including a tie for third in 2011 in five starts at Torrey Pines.

The field also includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan, Nicolas Colsaerts, Kyle Stanley, Brandt Snedeker, Vijay Singh and K.J. Choi.

The tournament is jam-packed with good players who have great track records at Torrey Pines. Woods has won six times, Mickelson has won three, Watson won in 2011, Snedeker won last year en route to the FedEx Cup title, Nick Watney won in 2009 and has a pair of top-10s since.

Perhaps the hottest player on the PGA Tour also has a strong track record at Torrey Pines despite not winning. Charles Howell III ranks fifth in all-time earnings at Torrey Pines, having made all 10 cuts with six top-15s, including a pair of runner-up finishes. He has started the 2013 season with a tie for third and a playoff loss.
