Myrtle Beach High School graduate Ramon Sessions had 20 points - his second-highest scoring output of the season - 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals Tuesday night in the Minnesota Timberwolves' loss to the New York Knicks, whom longtime Socastee coach Dan D'Antoni is an assistant coach under his brother Mike.
While Sessions' 20 points were far from his career high of 44, it was just his second game of 20 or more since joining the Minnesota in the offseason as a restricted free agent. He scored 23 against Phoenix on Nov. 27.
When Sessions signed with Minnesota in the summer, it was thought he would play some point guard - his primary position - and some 2 guard alongside rookie Jonny Flynn while coming off the bench. The latter hasn't happened often because T'Wolves coach Kurt Rambis wasn't keen on the idea. Therefore, Sessions' playing time has been sporadic. But, as he proved in two years with the Milwaukee Bucks, he produces when he gets minutes. He played nearly 31 minutes Tuesday, and Flynn played just under 25. Flynn had 6 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists.
"One thing Ramon and I often talk about is this being a business and he understands that he has to be ready to play whenever his number is called," said Sessions' close friend Trello Galloway, a Myrtle Beach high alum who is playing pro ball in Saudi Arabia. "He is an NBA starting point guard in my eyes and many others'."
Sessions entered Tuesday's game averaging 7.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. Those are all below his career averages. He has scored in double figures in 16 of 45 games this season.
Sessions has been mentioned in trade rumors from time to time. It's not necessarily shocking considering how the T'Wolves apparently don't seem to have a clear role for him.
I'm sure Dan D'Antoni noticed his solid play Tuesday. Especially since he and his brother Mike both were pushing hard to get Sessions in the offseason.
