Season finale canceled

Coastal Carolina baseball's game today against Radford has been canceled and will not be made up meaning Gary Gilmore will have to wait to get coaching victory No. 501 at Coastal. CCU's next game will be Wednesday when they begin play in the Big South Tournament at Danville. The Chants' opponent is TBA.

Baseball America projection

In its latest projection BA has Coastal traveling to Queens, N.Y. as a No. 1 seed. Coastal will place a bid to host, but most projections have little faith that the NCAA will allow the Chants to host at cozy Charles Watson Stadium.

Thigpen not the man just yet

You might have read the NFL Network’s Adam Schefter's report last week, which stated the Chiefs believe former CCU star Tyler Thigpen could topple Brodie Croyle for the starting job in 2008.

Now the Chiefs say they like Thigpen ... a lot. But to suggest that there is a open competition coming soon is a bit premature, according to Chiefs quarterbacks coach Dick Curl.

``If we were playing today Brodie Croyle would be our starter,’’ Curl said via telephone Tuesday. ``We are very fortunate to have [Croyle], Tyler, David Greene and Damon Huard.''

Curl likes Thigpen, and Croyle, which is part of the reason the Chiefs did not select a quarterback with one of their 12 picks in the April draft. He says the ball ``jumps’’ from Thigpen’s hand and that Thigpen has had a great offseason.

But Thigpen will open training camp by trying to topple Damon Huard, the No. 2 quarterback, not Croyle. And that's not such a bad thing for Thigpen as Curl notes it usually takes two quarterbacks to get through a season on the field.

RHP Austin Fleet 4-2, 4.31 ERA

I think it's time High Point raised the white flag ... through four innings Coastal has raked up 13 hits and 10 runs, leading 10-2. David Anderson, Dock Doyle and Tommy Baldridge have all homered. Wind is 20 mph out to left center, which is helping any fly ball.

Mercy rule anyone? ... it's over Coastal 12, HPU 3 ... Coastal clinches at least a share of the Big South

CCU-High Point Game 2

A bit of a surprise in today’s lineup with Derek Martin at first base, Martin has missed most of the season due to a rare eye virus …. Cody Wheeler gets the start. Wheeler might be the key to the Chants’ postseason hopes. If he can throw like he did against Clemson earlier this season, he gives the Chants a lefty ace with power stuff.

Top of the second Coastal 2,

High Point

1. HP jumped on Wheeler for a run in the first, but an RBI single by David Anderson and a sac fly by Tyler Bortnick allowed CCU to retake the lead.

Not sure if this means Martin has his complete sight back, but he has driven home a run here in the fourth, as has Rico Noel with a line drive to right and Scott Woodward made it back-to-back-to-back RBI singles. Noel’s average had dropped to .225 prior to game, and is in need of a much needed confidence boost. However, even with his struggles at the plate his glove is a plus.

This is getting ugly, call of the dogs .. let’s get back into AC. David Anderson just hit his career-best third home run and the Coastal leads 16-3 in the sixth inning.

CCU-High Point Game 1

The Chanticleers are debuting some new home whites tonight, from the press box they appear look a bit like the Arizona Diamondbacks jerseys if you substitute teal for maroon …. With Bobby Gagg out tonight (strained oblique) Joey Haug gets the call. Haug is 5-0 with a 1.86 ERA ….. Winds are brisk out to left center tonight, good day to be a ground ball pitcher

Second inning update …. After Dock Doyle’s opposite field home run gave Coastal a 1-0 lead after one, a catcher interference call on Doyle gave Max Fulginiti another chance and he took advantage driving home Randy Schwartz with a base hit.

High Point

took the lead a few pitches later as Pablo Rasario drove home Fulginiti with a base hit. … Did we mention the wind will be a factor? A Chance Gilmore routine fly out has drifted into a three-run home run to give Coastal a 4-2 lead after two.

Haug goes 5.1 innings, 11 hits, 5ks

McCully relieved him and allowed three runs to place the Chants in a 6-4 hole after eight. CCU rallied to tie in the ninth and send the game to extras … Baldridge singled home Woodward to win it for Coastal in 11.

Gagg out tonight

Bobby Gagg will not start for Coastal tonight against High Point. He has been scratched with a strained oblique muscle. No timetable has been announced for Gagg, though it seems unlikely he will pitch this weekend.

Men's basketball adds signee

Filling the scholarship left open by the departure of Bryant Wallace last week, the Chanticleers announced the signing of forward Marcus Macellari on Monday.

The 6-foot-7 Macellari averaged 12 points, seven rebounds and 3.5 assists for St. Joseph's High School in Indiana as a senior. Ellis said he is the top-passing  frontcourt player he has seen on the recruiting trail this year. The signing completes the Chants' 2008 signing class.
