Avid readers of The Opinion Blog likely remember a proposal I threw out several months ago to start pulling comments from here into the print edition of The Sun News. You've probably noticed, that hasn't happened yet (for a couple of reasons, one being that you guys had little enthusiasm for it yourselves).
My desire to do that was based mostly on a belief that word for word, much of the commentary produced here is about on par with anything else out there. You've been debating the constitutionality of the mandate to buy health insurance for months, for example, while Politico.com just caught on over the past week.
So I've been working on another scheme, this time just to give some of you a slightly larger platform for your musings. Let's try weekly guest columns, written by you, on The Opinion Blog.
The point of this is to foster the blog's best attributes: your creative thinking, your wit and your civility. We'd have to have some ground rules - for example, I know the bosses won't let me try this if I don't require real names from the guest posters. Further, one of my favorite things about the blog is fact that we have some real diversity of opinion, so I'd try to make sure the columnists we approve are in roughly equal proportion of progressives, centrists and conservatives.
I've been toying with this idea for a while, hung up mainly on how and when your columns would appear. The best way, I think, would be to treat this experiment like columnists on an op-ed page: anyone participating would have their own "day" once a week.
What do you think? I'll share more details in the comments, if you guys like the idea.
