Thousands of residents turned out to help build two new homes for families in dire need of them. That same generosity and altruism has been on display throughout the holidays. Many of you no doubt bought toys for needy children, contributed to red kettles or helped serve the underprivileged a Christmas dinner.

Thursday’s editorial calls for a criminal probe of the Waccamaw EOC, after it has repeatedly flouted the state’s open meetings law.
What, exactly, will it take to get the Waccamaw Economic Opportunity Council to stop breaking the law?
We don’t know what all goes on behind the closed doors of their frequent secret sessions, or their pre-meeting meetings. But what we do know is that these sessions appear to be illegal on their face, and that several people much closer to the situation than we are have said so in no uncertain terms.

As the state readies to redistrict itself, Wednesday’s column offers a brief history of the 1st District that we may soon be leaving.
The 1st Congressional District of South Carolina is one of the nation’s oldest districts, electing one of the state’s first U.S. representatives more than 200 years ago. Historically centered in Charleston, the 1st District has included the Grand Strand, in fact all of Horry County, but that is likely to change when the General Assembly adds a seventh district based on the state’s population growth. Tuesday’s editorials tackle a pair of health care issues. First, we urge residents not to forget that blood donations are needed year-round and especially during the holidays. Second, we appreciate the prudent course that Georgetown Memorial Hospital has taken in the planning of its new facility.
Donating a pint of blood is an inexpensive way to help one of the most worthwhile of causes. The donation takes only one’s time and blood donors soon have the pint of blood back as their bodies replenish it. Additionally, giving blood Wednesday or Thursday will trigger a cash donation to Helping Hand.
