The apocalyptic devastation that laid low the Midwest last week should offer Grand Strand residents a grim reminder of Mother Nature’s capricious fury.
It’s now been a number of years since we’ve been hit full on by the ferocity of a hurricane, although we’ve received some glancing blows. Interpreting that reprieve as a reason to let our guard down would be a mistake, however. Hurricane season officially starts June 1, beginning six months of wary watching and waiting to see if 2011 will be our year to suffer at the hands of Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don or the other storms waiting in the wings.
On Sunday, The Sun News offers its annual hurricane guide, which includes tips on preparing for a storm, riding out a storm and cleaning up afterward. While the information may be old hat to many readers, brushing up on the important details can make all the difference in the midst of crisis.
Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare. As the townsfolk of Joplin, Mo., can attest to, nature can’t be tamed and we’re still at the mercy of educated guesses about its actions. Let caution be your watchword this season.
