County chairman schedule set

UPDATE: Original post had both election days off by 2 days. I was looking at Thursdays on my calendar, not Tuesdays. Now fixed.

Now that Tom Rice has set a date (Dec. 31) for his official resignation as Horry County Council chairman, the election schedule is set for his replacement. The process summed up:

Once Rice resigns, filing opens at noon on the third Friday after Rice’s seat becomes vacant. It stays open for 10 days. The primary election will be held the 11th Tuesday – roughly three months – after Rice’s resignation date. The general election will be the 18th Tuesday following the resignation.

That means filing for the seat will be open Jan. 18-28. The primary election will be March 12, and the general election will be April 30, just before the summer tourist season kicks into high gear.
So far, however, the only people who've publicly declared for the seat are Republicans (Mark Lazarus, Liz Gilland and Al Allen), so the contest may very well be decided during the March primary.
