Wednesday’s first editorial highlights the annual golf tournament by the South Strand Lions:
Members of the South Strand Lions Club are hoping for good weather on March 2, the date of the Lions’ sixth annual charity golf tournament at Wachesaw Plantation East -- or at least better conditions than the event experienced last year when a downpour reduced the number of participants and limited play to nine holes.
The outing is the major fundraiser of the Lions Club and benefits the South Strand Assembly of God Food Bank and Lions eye care and scholarship programs. Carl Blake, a former president of the Surfside Beach club, says that even with the wet weather, last year’s tournament raised $5,000 for the food bank. That was an increase over the previous year and Lions want to build on that growth.
“We’re about halfway there,” with 144 golfers registered for the shotgun start at 9 a.m. With two and a half weeks to go, registrations are down from last year. Blake attributes this to several participants scheduled for a cruise on the tournament date. Sponsorships are “right on course” with five silver sponsors ($250 donation) and one gold sponsor ($500). Additional sponsorships are available and there are several openings for golfers. Foursomes signing up by Saturday will save $20 on the total entry fee.
The event includes breakfast and a catered luncheon and is a fun way to support the good works of the South Strand Lions and a vital food pantry.
